Satwinder Singh Vohra(Tony Vohra)

* Congratulations on your promotion to 9th Dan.

- I believe you are the first 9th Dan holder in England, is that right?

Thank you. Yes, I am the first Kukkiwon 9th Dan of Indian origin, now British. I was born in Batala Punjab, India on 20th March 1958 and then came to United Kingdom in April 1964 with my family settling here since then.

- What brought you into Taekwondo and how long did it take to have 9th Dan?

Born in India, coming to England in 1964, and settling in Nottingham which is still my home base.

As a boy, I enjoyed David Carradine’s "Kung-Fu" and this led to a fascination with Martial Arts. As a young teenager, Bruce Lee became famous and being an avid watcher of his films, this engendered a desire to emulate this very popular figure.

Training in the back garden, including Yoga from age 9, led to me joining various clubs. I received a background in Karate and Kung-Fu before finally realizing that Taekwondo was my forte! This is still my most beloved Martial Art, but my knowledge and skills have now encompassed Kung-Fu, Kick Thai Boxing, and Kuksool-won, with another speciality - Self Defence.

My journey began with me wanting to build my confidence back in 1975 in earnest.

Commenced TaeKwonDo Training 01.08.1975

1st Dan on 19th February 1977,

2nd Dan 10th November 1978,

3rd Dan 27th April 1981,

4th Dan 18th July 1984,

5th Dan 28 March 1988,

6th Dan 7th May 1993,

7th Dan 5th August 1999

8th Dan 8th September 2007

9th Dan 3rd December 2016

- Is Taekwondo your main profession or do you have another career?

Teaching TaeKwonDo and qualifications.

Taekwondo is my main career, However I also have the following experience.

Started in 1976 -1980 Trent Polytechnic Students Union Instructor.

Teaching voluntary part time instructor from 1976 to 1980 at other clubs in Nottinghamshire and travelling around England for personal development of teaching skills.

Registered with the Martial Arts Commission as 2nd Dan Instructor -TaeKwonDo of the British TaeKwonDo Association on 29th August 1979

Military service, at East Midlands Officer Training Corps, in Nottingham 1980-1982, teaching self defence, and unarmed combat to Officer Cadets within the unit.

Became a professional full time TaeKwonDo Instructor 1982. At which time I started my

own organization teaching and promoting TaeKwonDo / Martial Arts, locally, nationally and on the international stage.

This has continued to the present. Current membership includes students, black belts and masters from around the globe ranging from beginner to black belt 7th dan that are training with me on a regular basis with me as their mentor.

- I know you’re a British Indian, did you learn Taekwondo in India as well?

I came to England in 1964 and did not return to India until 1974 and 1975 for short holidays wishing family in my home town of Batala Punjab. I did not do any learning of Taekwondo in India then. I went to India again then in 2004/5 when my parents passed away as was my duty to take there remains back to where all our ancestors remains are now. After that and then I have been regularly to India to promote Kukkiwon Taekwondo there as knowledge of the martial arts is spreading worldwide.

- What is the most attractive things in Taekwondo that made you all the way up to this level?

Every journey begins with the first step and I did not imagine that I would get this far. What attracted me to Taekwondo were the tenets of Taekwondo; etiquette, modesty, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit. I believe that following these tenets empowers an individual to attain their chosen goal.

- How much TKD influenced in your life?

I had a passion ignited within me from my first class in Taekwondo. Having only thought about how to get to my next level. I feel very humbled to have achieved this which is an empowering experience. Emotion has created a motion within me to get so far. Living life with passion.

- Would you like to share some interesting memories while you were training TKD?

With TKD training and teaching, I have been fortunate to meet people from many walks of life which has been a very exciting journey. Working with the youngest from 2 years of age to my oldest black belt that tested when he was 75 years of age. It has been at times very challenging and very rewarding working with people of all ages. In Taekwondo people come together and are a family that are enjoying a harmony brought about through mutual respect and personal development.

- You also taught TKD to many students, is there anyone that you would never forget?

I believe that training with all ages gives positive energy, which they all have. It is nice to see students that I have mentored in their past that have then come back to thank me for the training years later. Some have been only with me for short periods of time. As my academy is based in Nottingham England and operating since April 1983 it is very close to Nottingham University so have had many international students that over a period of time qualified to black belt and still keep in touch. I still have contact with students worldwide from over 35 years.

- I know the Olympic style TKD in England is quite a world’s top level, how is the TKD’s prestige in England?

England as well as other countries has seen a change that Olympic style TKD has brought to peoples attention making more awareness of it. There are many positives of TKD that should be emphasized for promotion and encourage people to take it up to help keep a healthy mind and body for longevity of personal life.

- Some people think that TKD is a foot fighting, kicking sports or even calls it a foot fencing, what is your opinion on that?

People must remember that TKD is a martial art as well. Fighting is just one small aspect of the training and the teaching involved in Taekwondo practice. There are forms Poomsae, 1 step sparring, Self defense, kicking, blocks, attacks as well as mental focus, meditation these are all aspects of Taekwondo training. So people get health benefits as well. In teaching we are developing the whole human being and that will be with them during there whole life.

- What would you like to introduce about TKD to people who are not familiar with martial arts?

Over the years since starting TKD I have tried to encourage people from other walks of life to try Taekwondo. Training and teaching Taekwondo is important to promote and work with all people from different walks of life. Young, boys, girls, old, male and female. All can participate at their own level.

- Do you visit Korea often? When was your first-time visiting Korea and how’s the first impression?

My first visit to South Korea was in April 1998. It was a tour with over 40 instructors from Europe and I enjoyed it very much as we visited many places and I was there for two weeks. Everyday we had different tours and I found it to be an excellent cultural experience. I came back later that year for the 1st Kukkiwon foreign master Instructor course held at Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Headquarters and I stayed 10 days. Course was great and another inspiration for me.

After that, over the last few years I return to Korea on a regular basis . Last year in March , then in July August and just last month in December 2016. I enjoy the experience and culture of South Korea.

- What do you like about Korea the most?

I enjoy the cultural and hospitality of the Korean people.

- What would you like to say to people in Korea where TKD is originated from?

I feel very humbled to achieved this now at age of 58. They are a great hospitable nation and I have learned a lot from the different Grandmasters and Masters from my travels.

- Lastly, are there any special events this year or things that you would like to do?

I am looking to do a lot of teaching and training in 2017 now as we are all continually developing. I have a few events scheduled including helping to organize the 1st Kukkiwon International master Course and Hanmadang referee course run by the Kukkiwon in Alesbury United Kingdom from 17th to 22nd April 2017. I will also be working in the USA teaching and will be in South Korea in July August for a month attending different events and the Hanmadang competition then.
